Now
Melanin in YA began with a simple question: Where can readers, writers, publishing professionals, and entertainment professionals go to discover the people and stories shaping Black young adult culture?
We built the answer.
Today, Melanin in YA is a growing database and media platform dedicated to increasing the visibility and discoverability of Black creators, Black books, and the whole Black young-adult publishing ecosystem. We’re building a comprehensive discovery platform that is the infrastructure connecting readers, creators*, and industry professionals*. YA publishing is a major source of stories and IP and this is the place to be for searchable publishing data on those Black stories. It is the ultimate platform for the Black YA literary landscape.
- Creators: Authors, Illustrators, Narrators, etc…
- Industry Professionals: Agents, Editors, Publishers, Producers, Librarians, Educators, Journalists, Event Organizers, etc…
The database is only the beginning!

We envision a platform where the people shaping Black YA publishing on all fronts (agents, editors, authors, industry professionals, educators, etc…) can be discovered, researched, celebrated, and ultimately, be connected.
We plan to develop enhanced tools to discover talent, research the market, promote books and authors, and connect the publishing industry and entertainment industry. The future also holds for space being made to give emerging and established creators the opportunity to connect with industry professionals. Our goal isn’t simply to create another website for books. We’re building the infrastructure for discovery. Black authors and Black stories have always been part of young adult literature. Melanin in YA exists to make those stories, those connections easier to find.
